Inspire – High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

What is high potential and gifted education?
Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Shell Cove Public School, high potential and gifted education (HPGE) is integrated into our daily learning experiences. Many of our students demonstrate high potential across many areas, and we are committed to supporting and developing these strengths into meaningful achievements.
Our teachers identify each student’s learning needs and apply evidence-based strategies to extend and challenge their abilities. We provide a variety of learning pathways, including extension tasks and acceleration when suitable. Students identified as having high potential or giftedness across the cognitive, creative, physical, or social-emotional domains receive targeted instruction to meet their individual level of challenge. We create nurturing classroom environments that foster belonging, creativity, risk-taking, and collaboration, where students engage in open-ended and challenging tasks.
Assessment, flexible groupings, leadership opportunities, and feedback are key features of our approach.
Our practices align with the NSW Department of Education’s HPGE policy, which highlights the importance of supporting talent development and giftedness across four essential domains:
Creative Domain
Supporting students to develop original ideas and express themselves through creative thinking, problem-solving, and artistic pursuits.
Intellectual (Cognitive) Domain
Offering challenging learning experiences that nurture advanced thinking, deep inquiry, and intellectual development.
Physical Domain
Encouraging physical growth and wellbeing through activities that improve coordination, health, and physical skills.
Social-Emotional Domain
Promoting emotional resilience, self-awareness, and positive social interactions to support the wellbeing of gifted learners.
At Shell Cove Public School, we are dedicated to talent development by recognising and nurturing each student’s potential across these four domains, ensuring every learner is empowered to succeed.
At Shell Cove Public School, we offer a wide range of opportunities to support and extend our Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) students both within the school and the wider community. Our programs are designed to nurture talents across multiple domains, providing pathways for students to excel and engage beyond the classroom. At Shell Cove Public School, we offer a range of activities to help students develop their talents across the four domains. Each of these opportunities gives students the chance to develop leadership skills by supporting their peers.
SRC
At Shell Cove Public School, we develop students’ potential in the social-emotional and creative domains through the Student Representative Council (SRC). The SRC empowers students to be leaders and make a difference in the school. Members work together to plan events, share student ideas, and help create a positive, inclusive school culture. Being part of the SRC helps students develop confidence, responsibility, and teamwork skills.
Sport
To develop the physical domain, students engage in sporting gala days across the year, exploring various sports. This provides the opportunity to develop talents in their chosen sport and develop teamwork skills. Students also have the opportunity to participate in swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals, allowing them to display their potential in these areas and to represent the school, district, region and state. Students can also try out for the district teams for a range of sports.
Choir
To develop potential in the creative domain, we offer K-2 Choir and 3-6 Choir. Choir allows students to sing, perform, and share their love of music. Being part of the choir helps students build confidence, develop listening and teamwork skills, and experience the joy of performing together at school and community events.
Drama and Tech Club
Drama and Tech Club gives students the chance to explore both performance and behind-the-scenes skills. Students build confidence through acting, learn to work as a team, and develop creativity by helping design sets, lighting, and sound for performances.
We actively participate in statewide competitions and activities, providing our students with valuable opportunities to reach their potential and develop their talents. Through this collaborative and enriched approach, we ensure students’ unique talents are recognised, developed, and celebrated.
Some of the opportunities available to support the talent development of students at Shell Cove Public School through state-wide initiatives include:
- The Representative School Sport Pathway enables our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
- Australian Problem-Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) challenges students to stretch their thinking and enable students to face group and individual mathematical challenges. This competition builds confidence and further develops students with high potential in mathematics across the cognitive and creative domains.
- Premier’s Spelling Bee challenges students to stretch their thinking and develop their spelling skills. This opportunity develops students in the intellectual domain. This competition builds confidence, and celebrates a love of words in a fun, supportive environment.
- Premiers Debating Challenge provides the opportunity to develop talent across both intellectual, creative and social-emotional domains. The debating team encourages students to think critically, speak confidently, and listen respectfully. Through friendly competitions, they learn to build strong arguments, work as a team, and express their ideas with clarity and respect.
- Premier’s Multicultural Public Speaking gives students the opportunity to explore multiculturalism while practising their public speaking skills and developing their confidence.
NSW Department of Education support is available for high potential and gifted students, and we encourage and assist students with entries into other state-wide initiatives.
